The Usual Misuses Of Teeth

toothache

This month, we are diving into something a little different. We all know teeth are essential for chewing, speaking, and flashing beautiful smiles – but what else do people try to use their teeth for? And should they?

Everyday “Life Hacks” (aka the Things we wished you would stop doing)

  • Opening packages

Who needs scissors or a knife when your teeth are readily available? A quick nip to snap tape, twine or even a plastic bag – doable but not encouraged by either Dr Michelle or Dr Catherine

  • Cracking nuts or ice

Your teeth can do those things, but teeth were not designed to be nut crackers or blenders.

  • Tag Remover

Have an that annoying plastic tag off a shirt? Your teeth will help you get the job done, but scissors will be much neater with less loss of enamel.

  • Holding items when your hands are full

Keys, pens, hair clips – we get it. Sometimes teeth act as a third hand. Just don’t make it a habit!

Theatrical Uses – for the Drama Kings and Queens

  • Holding a rose in your teeth for a tango
Stylish? Absolutely. Sensible? Not particularly – but we do admire the flair.
  • Removing gloves with your teeth like a 19th-century duelist
Impressive… but please avoid flossing with leather.
  • Fake biting someone’s sleeve in protest
Sibling drama, toddler tantrums, or quirky flirting – the bitey move is bold (and mildly medieval).

✔️The Tooth Truth

While many of these alternate “uses” for teeth are entertaining (and some are even historically accurate – yes, people have cracked open walnuts with molars!), your teeth are not tools, no matter how handy they seem in the moment.

Using them improperly can lead to:

Treat your teeth with care, not like a toolbox.

Need help getting rid of a stubborn habit (like nail-biting or pen-chewing)? We are here to help with gentle advice and prevention strategies.

In Summary

Teeth are amazing – they help us eat, speak, smile, and express ourselves. Let’s celebrate them with a little humour and a lot of care.

Thanks for being part of our dental family here at Adelaide City Dental Care. Stay smiling, stay smart, and remember:
Your teeth are for treats – not tricks!

We hope your halloween evening went well. Dr Michelle did her usual basket at home with 60 toothbrushes, 4 mini boxes of toothpaste, 36 apples and 28 jackolantern mandarins distributed to the local children. Lots of laughs from the parents!

See you at your next visit,
